MazioCreate's FAQ
Why contextualise literacy & numeracy?
I think this question can be summarised by the following points:
... to make learning more immediately relevant to the needs and interests of students ...
... to provide students with a context for learning new skills ...
... to reflect how those skills will be applied in the community, a workplace or in their personal lives ...
... students combine these skills in contexts relevant to their personal interests and goals ...
Who are these resources for?
Originally these resources were developed for post secondary learners. However, they have also been implemented in high schools with students in Year 8 (13 years old) and with students from Special Education Units. They have been widely used with ESL students and youth who are attending alternative classes rather than a secondary school.
Have these resources been used with students who have an intellectual and/or learning disability?
To date, these resources have been used by teachers who work with students who have either an intellectual or learning disability. I made suggestions for how to deliver and the support their students might need. The majority of activities in the resources can be completed as a stand alone exercise. To this end, the feedback indicated that teachers selected specific activities for completion by the students.
How do you select the topics for the resoruces?
My students and I work in a partnership, and project topics are always a mutual agreement. I integrate the system we use to nominate and select topics to be undertaken into my literacy and numeracy program. Once the project topics are agreed upon (always 3 to cover a term) it is then my job to develop relevant activities that cover the training package and student outcomes. By incorporating this activity, students are engaged with the work because they own it.
How do you implement the resources in your classroom?
Based on the fact that the project topics are mutally agreed upon, the content is down to me. I take into consideration the areas that the students need to develop their understanding and application e.g. sentence structure / fractions, and develop activities that cover aspects of the topic and concepts that are related to student needs. Before implementing the activities I teach/cover the concepts that they will require to complete the tasks. Also, during the duration of the project, I work with small groups and one-to-one, to reinforce or introduce other concepts. These projects (resources) are developed to give learners the opportunity to work independently, in small groups or whole class. At every stage every student elects which activity they will work on during the day. There are times when I direct students to a specific activity e.g. group discussion, but on the whole projects are learner focussed.
